My Wonderful Walls was started with the idea that you shouldn’t have to be a professional artist to create a great looking wall mural. For years we have offered wall stickers and wall stencils that allow parents to create professional looking wall murals for their children. As we’ve added more designs for older kids, teens and adults to our site, we have been fortunate to partner with some great artists from around the globe in addition to our original art! This time we are traveling even further to bring you the mind-boggling art of digital artist Lyle Hatch. Looking at his art, you may feel like we’re taking you on a journey into a different dimension or into a sci-fi fantasy. Rest assured, the artist lives and works in Illinois but these wall stickers will instantly transform any space into something groovy and out of this world. Here’s a little Q&A with the artist Lyle Hatch about his background, his art and his involvement with My Wonderful Walls:
My Wonderful Walls: Where were you born?
Lyle Hatch: I was born in Aurora, Illinois in September, 1958.
MWW: Where do you currently live now?
LH: I have lived my entire life in Lisle, Illinois, a suburb west of Chicago.
MWW: Were you always interested in art? How and when did you begin?
LH: I have had an interest in art and drawing for most of my life. As a kid, my interest was mostly in drawing dinosaurs, animals, and landscapes. I did pencil portraits from photographs in my teens and twenties, but I haven’t done any of those in ages.
MWW: When did it turn professional?
LH: I began trying to sell my digital art online in about 2009. I also started selling a few random photos around that time. I would hardly call it professional, but yes I was making a few dollars.
MWW: Did you go to school to study art/graphic art?
LH: I took design, drafting, and CAD classes in high school and college, but not painting or artistic drawing. I am almost entirely self-taught when it comes to the computer software I use to create my digital art now.
MWW: What inspires your art?
LH: I am inspired by nature, light, and shadow for my photography and also by color, patterns, and textures for my digital art.
MWW: What medium(s) do you prefer?
LH: I am almost completely a digital artist these days. I use various computer programs to generate digital art, fractals, mandalas, and graphic art patterns and pieces.
MWW: What are your favorite things to draw/create?
LH: My favorite types of art to create are fractal images and mandalas.
MWW: What is your favorite My Wonderful Walls wall sticker you have been involved with creating?
LH: My favorite My Wonderful Walls piece that I have contributed is called Tree of Life.
MWW: What are some of your other interests?
LH: I also enjoy digital photography, collecting WWII memorabilia, and studying military history.
MWW: Is anyone else in your family an artist?
LH: My wife can draw very well and my 10 year old daughter loves any kind of art or craft that comes along. They are both artistically talented, in my opinion.
MWW: Do you live solely off your art or do you have another job/career?
LH: My primary career is as a Computer-Aided-Drafting (CAD) Designer for a process engineering company. We design and fabricate blending equipment for the soft drink / beverage industry.
MWW: In a few adjectives, how would you describe yourself?
LH: I am primarily an introvert, but outgoing in familiar surroundings. I have a great sense of humor. Politically conservative.
MWW: Do you have a favorite piece of work you’ve done? If so, what?
LH: A few…Tree of Life, Out of the Corner of My Eye, and Madman’s Sunrise – all fractal images.
MWW: How did you get involved with My Wonderful Walls?
LH: Stephanie sent me an email inviting me to enter into a licensing agreement with MWW, and to post my work on the web site.
MWW: Where can people see more of your designs?
LH: I have work displayed on many photography, art, and print-on-demand web sites. A few are Society 6, Zazzle and Design By Humans.
